Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn located in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father passed away, which made her mother Mary Pauline (Gold) to work as cleaner or waitress so that they could survive. Ruth was a student and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. Following only two school years she left for the acting career. There were many hurdles to overcome on her chosen career path. In New York she was hired to do a photo shoot for a publication about crime, but no theatrical jobs were forthcoming. After a brief stint as a club hat girl and a club hat girl, she made the decision to go home to the United States and quit her position. She made enough money by working as an usher during the day while working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She received a master's diploma in drama from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
